This morning as I walked into the pool area for my daily swim and prayer time, Art, the lifeguard, asked, "What's up?" I responded, "Me, barely." He laughed then asked, "Who are you following, the NBA or the Penguins?" probably assuming that my early morning lethargy was due to a late night watching sports. I said, "Neither, really," then paused and quipped, "I'm following Jesus." Pretty good for 5:28 am, eh? The response led to a brief discussion of the activities of the week, including this afternoon's appearance for me on WORD.FM's John and Kathy show. Art told me about his appearance on the Christian station in Kittanning to explain football rules (He's a PIAA official in football and swimming.) As I started my swim, I thought, "What if someone asked me the first thing every morning, ’Who are you following?' What if they asked you? How would we respond? Would the first thing out of our mouths be the name of our favorite sports team or star? Would it be some event in the news--the weather's been a big one there over the past several weeks? Would it be Jesus? Following Jesus makes more difference than anyone or anything else we could follow. We know that. Yet, we still find it easier to follow other people or things than Jesus. EASIER, yes, BETTER, no. Who or what will we follow today? Remember, Jesus said, "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything else you need will be added." That makes it simple to remember "Who's on first" in our lives and to remember--we are following Jesus! |
