All week we have been considering the "deadly" sin of pride. In today's scripture from Job 20:6-7 we see that as with all sins, pride comes naturally to the "godless": Though the pride of the godless reaches to the heavens and their heads touch the clouds, yet they will vanish forever, thrown away like their own dung. I don't know whether you've thought much about the reality that we are ALL godless, until Jesus Christ becomes our Savior and Lord. This occurred to me only after a cousin of mine, who had grown up with one of our other relatives said, "He's always been a godless person." The statement sank right to my heart. This relative has ALWAYS been a godless person. He hadn't been an outwardly wicked person. In fact he did (and does) many good things. What does it mean to be godless? It means to be without God. That defines every person who has not received Jesus into their life, who has not responded to the Good News of Jesus Christ. That may seem to be either an arrogant or an exclusive statement, but it's simply a true statement. God's word tells us that the pride of the godless may reach the heavens, yet THEY will vanish forever. That's the sad truth for millions of people. Our task as Jesus' followers is not only to live in the power of the Holy Spirit so we may overcome pride in our own lives, but we must reach out in truth and love to the godless, so their pride and every other sin will be subjected to the blood of Jesus, as has already been done for us. The more we understand the great gift of God in Jesus, the more we understand that apart from Him, we are ALL godless, and that the only antidote to godlessness is Jesus. That drives us to fulfill the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, Jesus' call to everyone who trusts Him as Savior and Lord! Take some time to consider Job 20:6-7. What is the application of it in your life right now? Let's pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to overcome the godlessness of our lives, and to bring us back into relationship with You. Fill us with the Holy Spirit that we may live godly lives, and tell others of the antidote to their godlessness. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
