Today's Scripture for worship at New Life is Philippians 3:17-21: 17Join with others in following my example, brothers, and take note of those who live according to the pattern we gave you. 18For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. 20But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Philippians 3:17-21 (Emphasis Added) Do you see the bolded text? Their god is their stomach. As we'll be emphasizing in worship today, and all week in my posts, gluttony seems like the least "deadly" of the Seven Deadly Sins to most of us, and yet the Apostle Paul pointed out that for some people their stomach is their "god." That hits really close to home for me. Throughout my life I've gone way past eating to live, and many times have lived to eat. By the Apostle Paul's definition, in those times my god has been my stomach. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter nearly as much what we say we believe as how we live out our beliefs. So how about a quick checkup? Read Philippians 3:17-21 and answer this question: Who or what is your god (God) right now? Is it Jesus? Your stomach? Your work? Your family? _______? When we know the answer to that question, we know what we need to do If Jesus IS our God, then we simply need to keep worshiping and serving Him and telling others about Him! If it's anyone or anything else, we need to change our god and put Jesus in that position! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, we confess Jesus is not always first in our lives. Forgive us and fill us anew with Your Holy Spirit that we may live every moment of today with Jesus in charge of our lives. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
