King Solomon weighed in on gluttony another time in his writings in Proverbs. Here's what he said about what happens to gluttons over the long-haul: 21for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Proverbs 23:21 NIV My mom used to say that Kenn, my little brother, and I were going to "eat her out of house and home." She was joking, but King Solomon made the point that when we eat and drink to excess the result IS poverty. As with all of God's good gifts, food is meant to be used to strengthen and sustain us, rather than as a focal point of our lives. The devil wants us to take every good gift God has given and use them to excess. Gluttony is a good thing gone overboard. When we overindulge in any material area the result will typically be poverty, since every material blessing costs money to purchase. More importantly than the actual poverty overindulgence brings, is the distraction from God as our first priority. After all, just us our stomachs can become our God (see this week's reading from Philippians -- Sunday's blog post), so can our eyes or hands or any other part of our bodies as we indulge them in pursuits that dislodge God as our main focus. Take some time right now to consider this: What is THE focus of your life right now? Is it God? Is it food? Is it some other material thing? Based on your response take some time to repent or praise God! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thank You for all the blessings of life You have provided us. Fill us with the Holy Spirit so we will ALWAYS put You first, and use the blessings You have provided to sustain our lives and to extend Your glory to others. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
