I love Acts 2:14-16. Peter addressed those who sought to dismiss the Holy Spirit's amazing work among the believers on Pentecost by chalking it up to the speech of drunks. Look how he put it: 14Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: Acts 2:14-16 NLT How logical! People don't get drunk before 9:00 a.m. It's usually simple enough for God's people to respond to the "common sense" complaints of people about the unreasonable nature of our faith in Jesus Christ. The truth is nothing is more reasonable than our faith in Jesus Christ. While those who reject God's existence or supernatural intervention into human experience, are not generally willing to listen to the reasons we offer for the faith that lies within us, you have to admit, Peter's simple, common sense response to the accusation that the believers were drunk makes a lot of sense. When folks tell me my faith is unreasonable, I always respond by saying, "No, it's quite reasonable." Think about it. We believe in a Creator God. Is that unreasonable? Not at all. Everything in our experience tells us if there is a creation, there must be a creator. The phones we use, the clothes we wear, the food we eat---all of them were grown or made by someone. Why, then, is it unreasonable to assume the universe has a Creator? Jesus told us He was God. Is that unreasonable? Let's see...He walked on water, healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead and rose from the dead Himself... sounds a lot like God to me! You say, "Some people don't recognize Jesus' miracles, or even that He ever lived." That seems unreasonable, given the vast body of evidence that Jesus did live, and the many witnesses to His miracles. Also, Jesus' followers still perform miracles in His name today, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Sure, there are those who don't believe that, but another person's lack of belief doesn't make the miracles less true, or invalid as evidence of the ongoing presence and power of God. I don't know why some folks see God at work and seek to dismiss it with a "reasonable" explanation, but I'm extremely grateful God amazes and perplexes me often! Heavenly Father, amaze and perplex us today! Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so we may show others Your amazing and perplexing love and power. This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen. |
