At the end of Peter's quotation from the prophecy of Joel is the "punchline" of the message: 21 But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved. Acts 2:21NLT How many people will be saved? EVERYONE who calls on the name of the Lord. Folks have argued and debated down through the millennia about whether Jesus' death on the cross was for everyone, or only for a select number chosen by God. The punchline of Acts 2:21 is EVERYONE who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Will EVERYONE call on the name of the Lord? Only if everyone is given the opportunity. Only if everyone understands who Jesus is. Only if the selfishness into which all of us are born is overcome by the Spirit. That's why the Spirit was sent to ALL people starting on Pentecost. May each of us trust in Jesus, may we call on Him and thus know the joy and power of His salvation! If we already do, then may we have the Spirit's boldness to make His salvation known to others. Heavenly Father, Thank You for pouring out Your Spirit on all people! Fill us anew with that Spirit that we may enjoy Your grace and extend Your glory. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
