On Sunday during my message, I mentioned that our daughters often came home from school with messages written on the backs of their hands. I don't know how many times Nancy or I urged them to write their messages on paper, but to no avail. Why they think something is easier to remember when written on their hands, I don't know, but perhaps they simply wanted to imitate God's directions to the Israelites for remembering His commands: 8Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. The Chinese have a proverb: The palest ink is better than the best memory. As I get older, I'm realizing how true that statement is. I used to think I could remember everything "in my head." Now, I know if something is important, I need to write it somewhere -- preferably not on the back of my hand! The Israelites were challenged to "tie" the commands of God to their hands and wear them on their foreheads as reminders, and to write them on their doorposts and gates. The modern equivalent of that practice may be wearing a rubber bracelet on a wrist with a message written on it. I guess the W.W.J.D. bracelets would be a form of the practice. Headbands with messages from God's word would help us remember to play our sports with God first, which would be a great thing for many of us. Many of us have plaques and pictures with Scriptures as their message hanging on our walls and sitting on our desks. Each of these helps us to remember God's word, which is the first step to learning and living it! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving us commands worth remembering and living in our lives! Fill us with the Holy Spirit that we may learn, remember and live them with joy and consistency. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
