Some say faith in Jesus doesn't make sense, or that there's no logic to the Christian faith. The reality is EVERY person lives by faith--some believe there's no God and nothing happens after we die. That's the faith of atheism. Some believe we must go through multiple cycles of life or be reincarnated when we die so we may ultimately be "perfected" and merge with the universe. That's a position of faith common to Buddhists and Hindus. Followers of Jesus believe: 14For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. The statement is nothing, if not logical. If Jesus died--and He did, and if He was raised to life again, a point with which some argue, but with which billions of people believe (yes, by faith), then it stands to reason that when we die, God will also bring us back to life--resurrect us--because of our faith in Him. I bring this up simply to underline that being a Christian does not mean being a moron as some folks claim. In fact, nothing is more reasonable than the Christian worldview. It is consistent from top to bottom precisely because it incorporates the supernatural into reality, and only the supernatural explains creation, and many other occurrences down through the ages. My goal is not to produce scientific "proof" that following Jesus is the one, true way, because by definition science doesn't accept the existence of the supernatural, which means one can never scientifically prove the truth of Christianity. That doesn't mean it isn't true. Science can't account for the phenomenon in human relationships called love. Scientists have attempted to explain it away be saying it's nothing more than chemical reactions, that emotions are all explainable through some type of chemical, mechanical or neurological processes. The Bible teaches that love isn't an emotion. It's an action. Feelings aren't the focus of faith, hope or love in the Bible. In fact, all are actions, and not actions based on human imagination, but on the assumption that the supernatural realm is real. Just because we can't see it, or touch it or taste it doesn't mean it isn't real. Of course scientists tell us that's just speculation. No it isn't speculation. It's well-reasoned conclusions based on the existence of much that we cannot see or understand. All of us struggle with our faith at times, because it assumes realities we can't see, and we've been trained with the scientific method to conclude if we can't see it, or explain it, it doesn't exist. Doesn't it stand to reason, though, if God created us and if His thoughts are a light year beyond our thoughts, that we would NOT be able to put Him in a Skinner box and explain Him? If I could explain God, then He wouldn't really BE God, would He? How could a finite being ever explain an infinite being? Scientists readily admit that even aspects of science don't resolve themselves to simple explanations. Is light a particle or a wave? Yes....what? As we go about this day, I'm glad to know there's a being who created everything, a being who decided when we turned our backs on Him, to come here to earth as one of us to show us the way, the truth, and the life, and then comes to live in each of us who trust Him. Some think it's vital to be able to explain everything. I'm glad God doesn't fit under a microscope, that He doesn't line up with the way we all think. After all, if I'm going to WORSHIP someone, I want Him to be far enough beyond me to be worthy of it, and only the living God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit is! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, we don't pretend to understand everything about You, but we do understand that You are love, and that You believe in us. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit that we may believe fully in You and show Your love to all the others we'll meet today. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
