I’ve been going through my journals and notes from years of messages and Bible study groups on the Holy Spirit. Gleanings follow. What does the Holy Spirit do? 1. He speaks (Acts 13:2). “The Holy Spirit said …” 2. He testifies (John 15:26). Jesus: “He (the Holy Spirit) will come to you from the Father and will tell you all about me.” 3. He teaches (John 14:26). Jesus: “… the Holy Spirit – he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I myself have told you.” 4. He guides (John 16:13). “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” 5. He leads (Romans 8:14). “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” 6. He seals (Ephesians 4:30). “And do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he is the one who has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.” 7. He gives gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4). “Now there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all.” 8. He baptizes (1 Corinthians 12:13). “ … we have all been baptized into Christ's body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit.” 9. He intercedes (Romans 8:26). “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our distress. For we don't even know what we should pray for, nor how we should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.” 10. He forbids (Acts 16:6-7). “Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had told them not to go into the province of Asia at that time. Then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus did not let them go.” 11. He gives life (John 6:63). “It is the Spirit who gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” 12. He convicts (John 16:8). “And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment.” 13. He comforts (John 14:26). “However, the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name …” 14. He regenerates (John 3:5). “Jesus answered Nicodemus, "I can guarantee this truth: No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.” 15. He empowers (Acts 1:8). “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you. Then you will be my witnesses to testify about me in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 16. He bears witness (Romans 8:16). “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.” How our actions affect the Holy Spirit.
1. He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30). “And do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live.” 2. He can be angered (Isaiah 63:10). “But they rebelled against him and grieved his Holy Spirit. That is why he became their enemy and fought against them.” 3. He can be tempted (Acts 5:9). "How could the two of you even think of doing a thing like this – conspiring together to test the Spirit of the Lord?” 4. He can be lied to (Acts 5:3). “Then Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself.” 5. He can be resisted (Acts 7:51). "You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit?” 6. He can be quenched (1 Thessalonians 5:19). “Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.” 7. He can be blasphemed (Matthew 12:31). "Every sin or blasphemy can be forgiven – except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which can never be forgiven.” 8. He will withdraw (Genesis 6:3). “Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, they will live no more than 120 years.” The Holy Spirit’s presence makes a difference. 1. The 70 elders (Numbers 11:25). “And the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. He took some of the Spirit that was upon Moses and put it upon the seventy leaders …” 2. Othniel, the Judge (Judges 3:10). “The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel's judge. He went to war against King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram, and the LORD gave Othniel victory over him.” 3. Gideon (Judges 6:34). “Then the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon. He blew a ram's horn as a call to arms, and the men of the clan of Abiezer came to him.” 4. Samson (Judges 14:6). “At that moment the Spirit of the LORD powerfully took control of him, and he ripped the lion's jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. But he didn't tell his father or mother about it.” 5. Saul (1 Samuel 10:10). “When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, they saw the prophets coming toward them. Then the Spirit of God came upon Saul, and he, too, began to prophesy.” 6. David (1 Samuel 16:13). “So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the olive oil he had brought and poured it on David's head. And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him from that day on.” 7. Simeon (Luke 2:25). “Now there was a man named Simeon who lived in Jerusalem. He was a righteous man and very devout. He was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he eagerly expected the Messiah to come and rescue Israel.” 8. Pentecost (Acts 2:3). “Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.” 9. Cornelius (Acts 10:44). “Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who had heard the message.” 10. The Ephesians (Acts 19:6). “Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.” |
